UTA Students Develop Durable Pavement Using Recycled Plastic

Tackling Environmental Problems

• ♻️ The project aims to solve two problems simultaneously: the need for better pavement and the issue of plastic waste.
• 🥤 Materials like water bottles, coffee lids, and grocery bags, which often end up in landfills, are being repurposed.

Rigorous Testing and Durability

• 📈 A specialized machine simulates 5 to 7 years of road wear or 10,000 vehicle passes by using a steel wheel submerged in water over 100°.
• ✅ While traditional asphalt crumbles under this pressure, the asphalt mixed with recycled plastic demonstrates superior durability and holds up significantly better.

Real-World Application and Expansion

• 🛣️ Following successful tests, UTA has paved two parking lots with this new material.
• 🚗 The Texas Department of Transportation (TexDOT) has taken notice, paving nearly a mile of Texas's first plastic road in Rockwall, with districts in Amarillo, Laredo, and Fort Worth preparing to follow suit.
• 🌍 Students have also assisted in paving a road in Bangladesh, and countries like Saudi Arabia and Nigeria have expressed interest.
• 🚀 Professor Hussein is confident that this innovation will be adopted across Texas and America, paving the way for a cleaner future.
