Tornado Safety: How to Shelter at Home or on the Road

Developing a Severe Weather Plan

• ⚠️ Review or develop a severe weather plan before a storm approaches.

Sheltering at Home

• 🏠 If you lack a basement or storm cellar, the safest place is the centermost part of your home on the lowest level.
• 🪞 Ideal locations include a bathroom, under a staircase, in a closet, or a hallway, ensuring there are no windows.
• ⬇️ Once in your safe place, get as low to the ground as possible.
• 🤕 Protect yourself from flying debris by covering your head with your hands and wearing shoes and a helmet if available.

Sheltering on the Road or in Mobile Homes

• 🚗 If driving or in a mobile home, find a sturdy building to shelter in.
• 🏞️ If no building is accessible, seek a low-lying area like a ditch or ravine and lie flat, shielding your head.
• 🚫 Avoid highway overpasses and under bridges, as these are extremely dangerous during a tornado.

Emergency Preparedness

• 🎒 Create an emergency kit with essential supplies.
• 📦 Include non-perishable food, water, medication, batteries, flashlights, a weather radio, and a phone charger.
