Syria Battles Wildfires for Fourth Day, Receives International Aid

Wildfires Rage in Latakia

• 🔥 Wildfires have been burning for four days in the Latakia province of western Syria, fueled by high temperatures and strong winds.
• 🏠 The UN reports that hundreds of families have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the blazes.
• 🌳 Approximately 100 square kilometers of forest have been destroyed, with swaths of farmland and vital infrastructure also impacted.

Challenges in Firefighting Efforts

• ⚠️ Firefighters are working in rugged terrain that is littered with unexploded ordnance and landmines, remnants from the civil war.
• ⛰️ Some of the remaining hot spots are in dangerous stages due to the rough terrain and steep slopes.
• 🚒 Over 80 teams have been deployed to combat the fires, facing difficult conditions.

International and Local Support

• 🤝 Neighboring countries have provided assistance, with Jordan sending firefighters and Turkey deploying several trucks and two planes.
• 🌍 Humanitarian organizations and over 20 teams from various Syrian cities, as well as from Turkey and Jordan, are present to help extinguish the fires.
• 🏞️ Efforts are underway to prevent the blaze from spreading into the Alfruck Reserve, a large interconnected forest area.
