Early History and Core Business

Post-Penn Central Era and Conrail

• 📉 The 1968 Penn Central merger's failure and subsequent bankruptcy by 1970 led to the formation of Conrail in 1976 as a rescue plan.
• 🤝 To foster competition for the new Conrail system, the D&H was granted track rights and financial assistance, significantly extending its operational reach.
