The Rise of the Khmer Rouge

• 🇰🇭 On April 17th, 1975, the Communist Khmer Rouge seized control of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and immediately ordered the evacuation of the entire city.
• 🚫 Residents were permitted to carry only what they could, with no exceptions for the sick, infirm, young, or old, and protests were met with violence or death.
• 🎯 The Khmer Rouge operated under a slogan for troublesome people: "To keep you is no profit, to destroy you is no loss."

Pol Pot's Radical Revolution

• 💀 Cambodia's Communist Revolution, led by Pol Pot (real name Saloth Sar), became the most radical and bloodiest per capita of the 20th century.
• 👥 Approximately 2 million people, or 25% of the Cambodian population, perished during the Khmer Rouge's four years in power through murder, starvation, and forced labor.
• 💡 Pol Pot, influenced by Joseph Stalin, aimed to erase the old world entirely, declaring 1975 as "Year Zero."

Erasing the Old World

• 🚫 Everything from the previous society was banned, including money, mail, markets, music, law courts, property, newspapers, sports, and even cosmetics.
• 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Concepts like the individual, marriage, and the family were erased, and the calendar was reset.
• 🚗 Luxury vehicles were destroyed, and their metal was melted down to create tools like plowshares.

The Killing Fields and Aftermath

• 🌾 Doctors, religious leaders, business owners, teachers, and intellectuals were forced into the countryside to become peasant farmers, leading to widespread starvation.
• ⛓️ Pol Pot blamed "parasites" and "counterrevolutionaries" for the famine, building over 100 concentration and death camps where prisoners endured torture before execution.
• 🇻🇳 The regime's atrocities were largely unknown externally until Vietnam invaded in 1978, ending Pol Pot's reign and forcing him into exile.
• 💀 Pol Pot died at age 72, never acknowledging his wrongdoing.
