NYC Enforces New Compost Rules: Fines Begin April 1st

Compost Rule Enforcement Begins

• 🗑️ New York City is now enforcing compost rules, with fines starting today, April 1st.
• ⚠️ First-time offenders will face fines of $25 for buildings with 1-8 units, and $100 for buildings with more than nine units.

What Must Be Composted

• 🍎 The regulations require separation of food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste from regular trash.
• 🍕 Accepted items include leaf and yard waste, prepared and cooked foods, pizza boxes, and compostable products.

Items Not to Compost

• 🚫 Items such as wrappers, pet waste, diapers, and personal hygiene products should not be placed in compost bins.

Collection and Benefits

• 🚚 Compost bins must be clearly labeled and less than 55 gallons; sanitation workers will collect compost on the same day as recycling.
• 🌱 The Department of Sanitation states that composting is beneficial for the environment and helps the city combat rat populations.
