New York Squirrel Rescued from Dumpster on Christmas Eve, Named Holly

Christmas Eve Rescue Operation

• 🚨 On Christmas Eve, a call came in about a squirrel stuck in a dumpster, leading to a significant rescue effort.
• 🚒 The scene involved a full-size firetruck, police cars, and an officer, which initially made the rescuer question if she was at the right location.
• 🐿️ Firefighters used olive oil to help free the squirrel from the dumpster.

Holly's Condition and Initial Care

• 😔 Upon rescue, the squirrel, later named Holly, was in poor condition, described as raggedy, limping, and scurrying under garbage bags.
• 🚑 The rescuer, Dani Wood from All Creatures Great and Small Wildlife Rehabilitation, wrapped Holly in a towel and placed her in a pet carrier.
• 🏥 Holly was found to be very dehydrated and skinny, but her wounds were healing well.

Rehabilitation and Recovery Plan

• 🏠 Holly is being kept in a confined, heated area to prevent her from expending too much energy trying to escape.
• 🔥 The goal is to keep Holly warm and active to promote quicker and better healing, rather than allowing her to enter a semi-hibernation state.
• 🍎 Her diet includes protein, rodent blocks, various nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews), and protein shakes and Pedialyte administered by syringe, as she is not drinking well on her own.
• 🧼 Wounds are kept clean, and she is monitored daily, with her recovery now largely dependent on her own rest and healing.

• 🌱 Dani Wood, a wildlife rehabilitator for 3 years, performs this work out of a love for animals and a passion for giving back.
• 💖 The rehabilitation efforts are all out-of-pocket, funded by personal resources as a chosen way to contribute.
