Mark 15: The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus

The Crucifixion at Golgotha

• ✝️ Jesus is led to Golgotha, the place of the skull, and offered wine mixed with myrrh, which he refuses.
• 📜 The charge against him reads "The King of the Jews," and he is crucified between two rebels.
• 🗣️ Passersby, chief priests, and the other crucified men mock Jesus, challenging him to save himself.
• ⏳ Crucifixion, a slow and torturous death, was a symbol of Roman execution, not a religious one, and Roman citizens were exempted.

The Final Hours and Death of Jesus

• ☀️ From noon to 3:00 PM, a darkness covers the land, a phenomenon noted in some non-biblical accounts.
• 🗣️ Jesus cries out, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" (My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?), quoting Psalm 22 and experiencing the separation from God due to sin.
• 💧 A sponge with vinegar is offered to Jesus, and with a loud cry, he breathes his last.
• 💥 The curtain of the temple is torn in two from top to bottom, symbolizing the removal of the barrier between God and humanity through Jesus' sacrifice.

The Burial of Jesus

• ⏳ As it was the preparation day for the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, boldly asks Pilate for Jesus' body.
• 🪦 Pilate, surprised Jesus was already dead, confirms with the centurion and grants permission.
• 🛌 Joseph wraps Jesus' body in linen and places it in a tomb cut out of rock, sealing it with a stone.
• 🚶‍♀️ Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph witness where Jesus is laid, marking the spot for future anointing after the Sabbath.
• 💔 For Joseph, Pilate, the Sanhedrin, and the disciples, Jesus' death appears to be the end of the story.
