Luke 23: The Trial, Crucifixion, and Burial of Jesus

The Trial Before Pilate and Herod

• 🏛️ Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, accused of subverting the nation, opposing taxes to Caesar, and claiming to be a king.
• 👨‍⚖️ Pilate finds no basis for the charges but, upon learning Jesus is a Galilean, sends him to Herod, who also finds no fault but mocks and sends him back.
• 🗣️ The Jewish leaders, seeking Jesus' death, accuse him of inciting rebellion, a charge Pilate and Herod find baseless.

The Crowd's Demand and Pilate's Decision

• 📢 Pilate offers to punish and release Jesus, but the crowd demands the release of Barabbas, a prisoner accused of insurrection and murder.
• ⚖️ Despite finding Jesus innocent, Pilate, pressured by the crowd and fearing unrest (and possibly threats to his position), surrenders Jesus to their will.
• ⛓️ Pilate has Jesus scourged, a severe punishment, as a political expediency to appease the crowd.

The Crucifixion and Last Words

• ✝️ Jesus is led away, and Simon of Cyrene is compelled to carry the cross after Jesus, weakened from scourging, falters.
• 💔 Jesus turns to the mourning women, prophesying doom upon Jerusalem and its children.
• 💀 Jesus is crucified between two criminals at the place called the Skull; one criminal mocks him, while the other professes faith and is promised paradise.
• 🗣️ Jesus utters his last words: "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing," and "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit."

Death and Burial

• 🌑 A supernatural darkness covers the land, and the curtain of the temple is torn in two, signifying the atonement and direct access to God.
• 🕊️ The centurion, witnessing these events, declares Jesus a righteous man.
• ⚰️ Joseph of Arimathea, a council member who had not consented to the decision, asks for Jesus' body, wraps it in linen, and places it in a new tomb.
• 🕯️ The women who followed Jesus prepare spices and perfumes but rest on the Sabbath, intending to anoint the body later.
