Understanding Soft Skills

  • 💡 Soft skills are personal attributes that enable effective and harmonious interaction with others, such as communication, adaptability, and helpfulness.
  • 🧠 They are distinct from hard skills (like engineering knowledge or programming) and are crucial for leveraging those hard skills in a professional setting.
  • 🎯 Job descriptions often list soft skills as requirements, but simply stating them on a resume is not the most effective approach.

Three Rules for Soft Skills on Resumes

  • ⚠️ Rule 1: Speak Against Your Own Interests. Avoid self-promotional language; instead, present information that is more believable and less like an advertisement.
  • 🔗 Rule 2: Always Include Context. Soft skills are only valuable when demonstrated in the context of execution and achieving organizational goals, not in isolation.
  • ✍️ Rule 3: Show, Don't Tell. Instead of listing soft skills, provide concrete examples of accomplishments that demonstrate these skills in action.

Fixing Your Resume

  • 🗑️ Remove Soft Skill Paragraphs: Eliminate generic summary paragraphs that list soft skills without proof; replace them with actual accomplishments.
  • 🚫 Follow the No Adjective Rule: Convert adjectives describing soft skills (e.g., 'collaborative') into verbs showing action (e.g., 'collaborated'), then detail the results.
  • 📉 Remove Intensifiers: Eliminate words that amplify skills (e.g., 'excellent,' 'highly,' 'superior') and instead quantify achievements to let the results speak for themselves.

Resume vs. Interview Roles

  • 📄 Resume's Job: To get you the interview by presenting headlines of what you've done and how well you've done it, enabling a quick binary decision by the hiring manager.
  • 🗣️ Interview's Job: To explore the 'how'—the soft skills and the story behind your accomplishments, providing the details that the resume cannot.
  • ✅ Respecting these distinct roles will increase your success in both the resume-writing and interview stages.
