Police Week and Honoring First Responders

• 👮 Police Week is a time to honor the service, sacrifice, heroism, courage, and bravery of the law enforcement community.
• 🇺🇸 It is also a time to pay respects to fallen officers and support their families.
• 🏛️ Democrats believe respecting Capitol Police, Metropolitan Police, and other law enforcement who defended the Capitol on January 6th should happen immediately, especially during Police Week.

The Law Requiring the Jan. 6 Plaque

• 📜 A law passed in 2022 mandated a plaque be placed in a position of honor on the Western Front of the Capitol by March 15th, 2023.
• 📝 This plaque is intended to list the names of officers who defended Congress on January 6th against a violent mob.
• 🤕 Approximately 140 officers were seriously injured defending the Capitol, with several subsequently dying.

Democratic vs. Republican Stance on Jan. 6

• ⚖️ Democrats are committed to respecting and honoring law enforcement officials who defended the Capitol on January 6th.
• ❌ Republicans are accused of preferring to pardon violent felons who attacked police officers on that day, with thousands of individuals from the mob now back in communities.
• 📢 House Democrats attempted to discharge legislation to erect the plaque via unanimous consent, but Republicans rejected it.

Republican Obstruction and 'Erasing January 6th'

• 🚫 The law's non-compliance and the failure to erect the plaque are attributed to Republicans, allegedly directed by Donald Trump, to erase January 6th.
• 🗳️ This effort is seen as an attempt to pardon those who attacked police and to overturn the election results where Donald Trump was defeated by Joe Biden.
• ✊ Democrats vow to continue advocating until the officers who defended the Capitol are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
