Genesis 3: The Fall of Man and the Consequences of Sin

The Serpent's Deception

• 🐍 The serpent, representing Satan, tempts the woman with half-truths, questioning God's command about not eating from the tree in the middle of the garden.
• 💡 The serpent claims eating the fruit will open their eyes and make them like God, knowing good and evil, appealing to the lust of the eye, lust of the flesh, and pride of life.
• 🍎 The woman, seeing the fruit as good for food, pleasing to the eye, and desirable for wisdom, takes and eats it, then gives it to Adam, who also eats.

Realization and Hiding

• 😳 Upon eating, their eyes are opened, and they realize they are naked, prompting them to sew fig leaves for coverings.
• 🌳 Hearing the Lord God walking in the garden, they hide among the trees, an act of foolishness stemming from fear and shame.

The Blame Game and Consequences

• 🗣️ When questioned, Adam blames the woman God gave him, and the woman blames the serpent for deceiving her, initiating a cycle of blame.
• 🚫 God curses the serpent to crawl on its belly, placing enmity between it and humanity, and curses the ground due to Adam's disobedience.
• 🤰 Eve faces severe pain in childbearing and a desire for her husband, who will rule over her.
• ⛏️ Adam will toil painfully to eat from the ground, which will produce thorns and thistles, and he will eventually return to dust.

Banishment and Brokenness

• 🛡️ God makes garments of skin for them and banishes Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden to prevent them from eating from the tree of life and living forever in their fallen state.
• ⚔️ Cherubim and a flaming sword are placed to guard the way to the tree of life, signifying the separation from paradise.
• 💔 This event marks the beginning of a broken and fallen world, where sin corrupts relationships between God and people, and among people themselves.
• 📖 The entire Bible, from Genesis onward, chronicles the relationship between God and his people within this fallen context, leading towards the New Jerusalem.
