FSU Police Chief Details Fatal Campus Shooting and Response

Campus Shooting Incident

• 🎯 At approximately 11:50 a.m. on Thursday, April 17th, a gunman opened fire near the student union building on the Florida State University main campus.
• 🚨 FSU Police responded immediately, engaging, neutralizing, and apprehending the shooter.
• 💔 Two individuals were fatally shot, and five others were transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds.
• 🏥 The shooter, believed to be a current FSU student, was also transported to a local hospital.
• ⚠️ The deceased victims were not students.

University Operations and Support

• 🏫 All Florida State University classes and business operations on the main campus in Tallahassee were cancelled through Friday, April 18th.
• 🏈 All FSU athletic events in Tallahassee were cancelled through Sunday.
• 🆘 Students in need of assistance were directed to the Donald Tucker Center, where counseling and healthcare support were provided.
• 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family members could also go to the Tucker Center for assistance.
• 📞 Students, faculty, and staff were advised to contact loved ones to update them on their status.

Crime Scene and Safety Measures

• 🚫 The student union and surrounding area were considered an active crime scene, and individuals were asked to avoid the area.
• 🏠 Students were instructed not to return to the student union to retrieve personal property and to stay indoors on the main campus.
• ✈️ Students were permitted to depart campus for the weekend.
