Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month

• 🇨🇱 Chile declared sovereignty from Spain on September 18, 1810.
• 🇺🇸 Hispanic Heritage Month originated as a week in 1968 and was expanded to a full month by Congress in 1988 to honor the history and contributions of Hispanic Americans.

El Museo del Barrio: A Cultural Hub

• 📍 El Museo del Barrio, located in Spanish Harlem on Fifth Avenue and 104th Street, is a premier destination to experience Latin American art and culture in New York City.
• 🏛️ It is the oldest museum in the United States dedicated to Hispanic art, serving as the community's museum to honor and promote proud Latino identity in NYC.
• 🎨 Founded in 1969 by Puerto Rican educators and parents, including artist Raphael Montañez Ortiz, the museum was established to address a lack of representation.

Exhibitions and Collections

• 🖼️ The current exhibit, "Hayando," features works by dozens of Hispanic artists, playing on the Puerto Rican word for "hanging out" and "hanging art."
• 📚 The museum's permanent collection comprises over 8,500 works of art, including recent acquisitions displayed for the first time, some speaking to shamanic practices.
