Early Life and Marine Corps Journey

Iraq Invasion and Recon Training

• 🇮🇶 Eddie's first deployment was to Iraq in 2003 with 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance, where he experienced intense firefights and the rapid advance to Baghdad.
• 🎯 Driven by a desire to be a Reconnaissance Marine, he underwent rigorous pre-Basic Reconnaissance Course (BRC) and BRC training at Camp Pendleton and Coronado, despite a broken jaw.
• 🛠️ This training, though described as a "haze fest," prepared him and his peers for the physical and mental demands of reconnaissance operations.

Fallujah Ambush and Critical Injuries

• ⚠️ In February 2004, Eddie deployed to Fallujah, where his unit faced a hostile environment and conducted counter-rocket, IED, and reconnaissance missions.
• 🔥 On April 7, 2004, his convoy was ambushed with heavy machine guns, mortars, and RPGs; Eddie, in the lead vehicle, was hit by an RPG.
• 🤕 The blast instantly caused traumatic double amputation of his arms and severe damage to his left leg, with his femur protruding.
• 💡 Despite his critical injuries, Eddie remained calm and alert, instructing fellow Marines on applying tourniquets to himself and directing return fire.

Recovery and Life Beyond Combat

• 🏥 After evacuation, Eddie underwent multiple resuscitations and extensive medical care at a field hospital, then Walter Reed, where he witnessed the passing of Corporal Jason Dunham.
