Rescue Operation in Marina del Rey

• 🐦 Dozens of double-crested cormorant chicks and eggs were rescued from a damaged eucalyptus tree in Marina del Rey.
• 🌳 The tree, located in Burton Chase Park, was at risk of falling due to strong winds damaging its base, making it unstable.
• ⚠️ For safety reasons, the tree had to be removed as it was situated near a public walkway and parking lots.

International Bird Rescue's Role

• 🤝 The non-profit International Bird Rescue, in coordination with LA County Department of Beaches and Harbors, undertook the rescue effort in early March.
• 🐣 More than 60 chicks and eggs were brought to the International Bird Rescue's LA Wildlife Center in San Pedro for care.

Intensive Care for Young Cormorants

• ⏳ Replicating the natural incubation and feeding process is a significant challenge, as parents typically incubate eggs for over a month and feed chicks through regurgitation.
• 🍼 Some chicks are already about 2.5 weeks old and require highly intensive care, including the use of puppets to simulate parental feeding.
• 🏥 The organization is focused on helping these chicks and eggs grow, with the goal of ensuring their survival and eventual return to the wild.
