• 🏗️ The Darb Labana neighborhood in historic Cairo, once dilapidated and largely uninhabitable, is undergoing meticulous dismantling and reconstruction.
• 📍 Nestled below the 8-century-old citadel, the area's street patterns have remained largely unchanged since Napoleon Bonaparte's occupation.
• 🧱 Many existing houses, built over a century ago, were too small and lacked essential infrastructure like plumbing.

Restoration Process and Goals

• 📐 The project aims to make buildings livable for residents while preserving original street plans and facades.
• 🛠️ Foundations have been firmed up, and new sewage, plumbing, and electricity systems have been installed.
• 🏘️ The urban fabric is being maintained, creating a modern version of the old in areas where buildings were completely destroyed.

Project Scope and Resident Return

• 🏠 The project rebuilt 23 completely destroyed buildings and renovated 15 partially destroyed ones.
• 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Of the 102 families who previously lived in the area, 52 have decided to return upon the project's completion next year, with 20 returning to their original addresses.
• ✨ The goal is to make standing buildings livable and construct new buildings in empty spaces, creating a model for other decaying neighborhoods.
