Run a budget-guarded research desk
Let analysts run deep research while an agent checks remaining credits before each heavy run — ambition with a spending cap.
get_credit_statusdeep_queryThe problem
You want the desk using deep research aggressively — that's the point of paying for it. You also want the month's budget to survive contact with an enthusiastic analyst and an agent that happily runs forty deep queries before lunch. Those two wants collide in every team that gives AI tooling real spending power: usage you can't see until the invoice is usage you can't manage.
The naive fixes are both bad: rationing kills the aggressive usage you wanted, and trust-plus-hope kills the budget. The grown-up fix is the one every other metered resource gets — a guard in the loop: check the meter before the expensive step, degrade when it's thin, and make consumption visible while it happens instead of at month-end.
How veridive MCP helps
get_credit_status is the meter, free to read: wallet balance, plan tier, and today's remaining free quota, callable by any agent or analyst at any moment. That one tool turns budget from a month-end surprise into a loop variable.
deep_query is the spend it guards. The pattern is simple to state in an agent's instructions: before each research run, check credit status; below the floor, ask before proceeding or fall back to lighter tools. Analysts get self-serve visibility ("what's left today?" is a prompt, not a Slack thread to you), scheduled research jobs get spend-aware behavior instead of blind loops, and the desk's ambition stays high because the guardrail — not anxiety — is what's managing the budget.
How to run it
- 1Connect veridive MCP
One-time setup: add the veridive MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client and generate your API key. Takes about two minutes.
- 2Make the meter visible
Anyone on the desk can read the budget state directly — balance, tier, today's remaining quota. Free call, instant answer.
What's my veridive credit status — balance and today's remaining quota? Use get_credit_status. - 3Put the guard in the agent loop
Standing instruction for research agents: meter first, then the heavy run — with a floor and a fallback.
Before running deep research: check my veridive credit status. If remaining credits are below <floor>, tell me and wait for approval instead of proceeding. Now: <research question> — use deep_query. - 4Budget the sprint, not the surprise
Before heavy research days, read the meter and plan the run order — deep questions where they earn it, lighter passes elsewhere.
Check my credit status, then propose how to sequence these research questions within the remaining budget: <list>.
Problems it solves
- AI research spend is invisible until the invoice — unmanageable by construction.
- Autonomous agents loop through expensive calls with no concept of a budget unless given one.
- Rationing access kills exactly the aggressive research usage the tooling was bought for.
- "How many credits do we have?" becomes a recurring interrupt aimed at whoever owns the account.
Why it's valuable
- Ambition with a floor: the desk researches hard, the guard catches the budget edge.
- Spend awareness moves into the loop itself — agents degrade gracefully instead of failing loudly.
- Self-serve visibility: the meter is a free prompt away for every analyst.
- The pattern generalizes to any agentic workflow you build on veridive — one guard, every pipeline.
Example prompts
My veridive credit status — balance and today's quota? Use get_credit_status.Check credits first; if below <floor>, stop and ask me. Then research: <question> — use deep_query.Given my remaining credits, sequence these questions for the day: <list>.FAQ
Does checking credit status cost anything?
No — get_credit_status is a free call. The guard adds zero spend to the loop it protects.
Can the agent enforce the floor by itself?
The pattern is instruction-level: you tell your agent to check-then-decide, and modern MCP clients follow it reliably. For hard enforcement, scheduled jobs can be structured to always start with the meter read and bail below the floor.
What's a sensible floor?
Enough for the day's must-run work plus one unplanned deep dive. Read the meter for a week to learn your desk's rhythm, then set the floor where 'graceful' still means productive.
Related use cases
Teach your agent to detect low credits and fall back to free tools — library search still answers when budgets don't.
Query balance and daily quota mid-sprint — plan heavy research days around what's actually left.
A scheduled agent checks the connection, sweeps the last day's uploads in your space, and drops summaries before your first coffee.
